Family Promise at St. John's Lutheran Church

Along with twelve other local Beaufort area churches, St. John's Lutheran Church provides food and shelter to homeless families in our area. St. Mark's Chapel, Episcopal is St. John's support congregation in this effort.

St. John's Lutheran Church is a proud host congregation with Family Promise. St. John's hosts families quarterly in order to support the Mission of Family Promise of Beaufort County.

Family Promise of Beaufort County is an interfaith non-profit organization committed to helping low-income families achieve lasting independence. We help families accomplish this by providing shelter, meals, and support services for homeless families, and through programs designed to redress the underlying causes of homelessness.

The sad fact is the average age of the homeless is none years old, and 60% of the participants of Family Promise are children. Not exactly the population we think of when we think of the homeless.

We are part of this program because there are no homeless shelters in the Beaufort County area. Nationally there are 5000 congregations and more than 120,000 volunteers who help with this worthy ministry. The families receive training for job and money management so they can become self-sustaining. 80% of the families in the program move on to long-term housing. This past November, one of our local families obtained housing.

Family Promise was founded on the belief that one homeless child is too many. We believe that the citizens of Beaufort County are compassionate people who want to make a difference. As the 131st Family Promise affiliate in the nation, our mission is to link those in need with those who want to help. Volunteers are needed during each hosting week, to provide meals and friendship to our guests.

Our next host week is from September 12, 2010 to September 18, 2010.

Please consider how you can help. It takes close to 50 volunteers for a successful host week. We need volunteers to stay overnight as hosts each night, prepare meals, provide lunches, set-up and then take down the beds, move furniture, and do laundry. There is an opportunity for everyone.

There is a sign-up sheet in the Narthex.

Here are additional future 2010 host weeks here at St. John's Lutheran Church:

     November 21, 2010 to November 27, 2010
Please mark your calendars now and consider how you can help.
