St. John's Lutheran Landscaping Team

Caring for God’s Good Creation

Genesis 2:15:
The Lord God put the man in the Garden of Eden.
He put him there to work its ground and to take care of it.

St. John's has formed a landscaping team!

Our Mission: Beautify our grounds by using native, sustainable, low maintenance plantings

Our current team members:

Claria Gorgen
Mari-Ann Taylor
Larry Taylor
Annette Godsey
Lena Jones
Jim Jones
Wade Bishop
Sue Mannheim
Paul Mannheim

If anyone would like to join the team, please contact any of the current team members for more details.
If you have any suggestions for landscaping ideas, please place them in the "Green" box in the Narthex.

Our completed projects:

  • Added a light at the church entrance sign, making the entrance more visible and safer at night.

  • Living screen around HVAC units at right side of building. This project blocks the HVAC units from view with a fence covered with blooming yellow jasmine. This was paid for by the St. John's Luheran Women.

  • Created a new flower bed area in the right portion of the portico area in front of church with tree olives, small hedges, sago, palm trees, and flowers. Work and plants donated by Claria and Chuck Gorgen.

  • Enlarged and improved the flower bed in front of wall at portico entrance to church, with additional plants. Work and plants donated by Claria and Chuck Gorgen.

  • Our current projects:

  • Greens Garden
This project will plant trees and shrubs suitable for greenery used in the church at different times. This garden will also be on the right side of the church.

  • Entrance Sign landscaping
This project will landscape around the entrance sign.

    Future projects under consideration:

  • Landscape area in front of portico
  • Revive the Leland Bishop Meditation Garden along the marsh
  • Create a landscaped walkway with a sitting area between the parking areas on the left side of the church
  • General landscaping and maintenance of church grounds
  • Answers to Questions/Suggestions:

  • A playground made from reclaimed made for the children.

  • This has been turned over to the long-range planning committee.

  • Can you trim the crape myrtles on right between Lady's Island Drive and first parking area so they will grow more branches and become more bushy with more blooms?

  • The chop-back pruning technique, named "crapemurder" used on large tree-form crape myrtles is not recommended. This method of pruning destroys the grace and beauty of the plant. Here is an article about the correct way to prune crape myrtles.

  • Can the azaleas be pruned back any time of the year?

  • The best time to prune azaleas is right after they bloom in spring or early summer. Cutting them back any other time of year will remove flowerbuds and keep them from blooming. Here is an article about pruning azaleas.

  • Can we clear the brush around the marsh area?

  • Beaufort County has a river buffer ordinance, which helps to protect waters from various types of pollution. The South Carolina Department of Health’s Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management or (OCRM) has established a “critical line,” and the County requires a buffer strip must be maintained as an undeveloped landscape or undisturbed natural area with some restricted uses. According to OCRM, the church's set back "critical line" is one hundred feet.
